Non Categorized Businesses
If you are a business that is non-categorized, that simply means that you have a business that does not fall into any particular sector. When you file your business's tax return and your business doesn't fall into any of the category codes that you must place on your return, then it is fair to say that you are uncategorized.
To clarify further, you don't fall into the category of agriculture, marketing, manufacturing, or anything like that. Because of this, it can be difficult to figure out what kind of general liability insurance you need. The good news is that you have do have options even if you don't know what category your business resides in.
It is first important to understand what general liability insurance is. It is insurance that covers you in the case that bodily injury or property damage is caused to someone else due to the negligence of your business. Anyone in your business can be at fault. A negligent act can be something as simple as not cleaning up a spill before someone visiting your facility slips and falls on it to not seeing someone who was in the path of heavy machinery that one of your employees was operating.
You can also have protection against advertising injury. This is injury that is caused to another company's reputation that hurts their bottom line. If you were to do an advertisement comparing your product to theirs and it is proven that the ad has hurt their business, you could owe them the damages.
Whatever the damages, you set limits to your insurance so that you can pay damages up to those limits. You want to make sure you have enough so that you can cover all of the damage with your insurance coverage. If you don't, your business could be paying more than just an insurance premium.
There are extras that you can add. If your business operates a fleet of vehicles, you can insure those vehicles. That way if any of them are involved in an accident that causes bodily injury and/or property damage to someone else, you can have it paid for.
You can also arrange to have additional automobile coverage that covers the personal vehicles of your employees if they are using their automobiles to perform job tasks. This falls under non owned automobile insurance. And if you have to rent a vehicle to perform work, then you have access to hired auto insurance. Although rental vehicles come with insurance, it may not be enough to cover damages, especially if you are using those vehicles to conduct business.
There are all types of protections that can meet your specific business needs. Even if the reason why your business is non-categorized is because your functions are very unique and unlike any other businesses in your area, you can rest assured that you can customize your insurance to meet your needs.
What is great about being able to customize your insurance is that you are able to ensure that you don't pay for what you don't need. In other words, if you don't need auto coverage, then you don't have to have it. As far as the general liability itself, every business, even non categorized businesses, that deals with the public must have some kind of protection. Even if you feel that there is no way an accident may occur, you may be surprised. Those that have to pay out of pocket tend to be the ones who thought they did not need to be protected because there was no way an accident would occur, but an accident did occur.
